3 Tips For Fall Fertilizing Container-Grown Crops

Avoid using high-nitrogen, quick-release fertilizers that have a longer than 2-month release curve. This will reduce the possibility of freeze damage from an early frost or freeze on new tender growth.

The best time to apply a fall short-term (1-2 month) fertilizer is between late August and late September.

Controlled-Release Fertilizers (CRF’s) are safer to use in the Fall since their release is based on temperature. As the temperatures naturally drop in the fall, the CRF’s release will decrease until they completely stop, usually by mid to late November.

The key is: If you need to catch the fall flush on certain trees and shrubs, do it early. Like you, I’m looking forward to enjoying the cooling temperatures of the first fall cool fronts.
