Tips for Summer Survival

Watering

  • When the summer heat turns on, watering is crucial for plants to survive. Watering longer but less often aids in driving the roots deeper. Remember to adjust water rates during low humidity and windy days.

Insects & Disease

  • Keep a watch for summer insects and diseases. Chinch bugs are anxiously awaiting to attack weak, underwatered St. Augustine grass. Be aware of sod web worms, grubs, and late summer/fall army worms. Inspect trees and shrubs for aphids, scales, and spider mites. After rainy spells, inspect plants and turf for fungal disease.

Fertilization

  • Summertime exaggerates nutrient leaching. Due to the fear of burning the plants or turfgrass, many hesitate to feed at all. A best practice rule of thumb is to water thoroughly after each application. When temperatures are above 85, don’t wait for the irrigation to cycle; water each zone immediately.
