Happy Independence Day!

I was standing in the door of a C-130 military transport plane, ready to jump at 1500 feet going 130 mph. My squad of fellow paratroopers was behind me, ready for me to lead the way. Looking down at the drop zone below, I asked myself, “How did I get into this situation?”

It all began while I was a member of the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M. In my sophomore year, I decided that I had an obligation to my country to serve. My dad served as an officer in the United States Air Force, and my father-in-law was a combat infantryman in WWII. It was my turn.

As we look forward to celebrating our Independence Day this year, let us not forget all those brave men and women who took chances with their families, livelihoods, and lives to create the foundation of these United States. God bless America!
